Practice Groups

The Great Wolf Swim Team offers a program for all ability levels. The goal for all swimmers is to continually improve. Part of the fun of competitive swimming is noticing your accomplishments. Each of the programs listed below is designed to provide the correct level of instruction and participation to keep swimmers improving and having fun. Consult with a coach for any questions you have about which program is best suited to you.

AGE GROUP

Pups:


 

Fees: $100/month

 

This is the entry level program of the Great Wolf Swim Team. Swimmers in this program will need to be able to easily swim one length of a 25 yard pool. The emphasis of this program will be learning the four basic strokes, starts, and turns. 

 

Pups are encouraged to: 

  • Attend two to three 45 minute practices per week
  • Compete in beginning level meets as soon as possible

 

Equipment Needs For Each Practice:

  • swimsuit
  • goggles
  • water bottle

 

To be in this group you must be able to do the following:

  • Swim 25 yards freestyle, breathing to the side
  • Swim 25 yards backstroke

 

Pup Skills: circle swimming, streamlined push-off, kicking for all four strokes, flip turns, backstroke flip turns, open turns, proper use of a kickboard, front crawl with rhythmic breathing on both sides, racing starts from the blocks, backstroke racing starts and finishes, two hand finishes, the proper technique for all four strokes.

 

 

 

Trackers:

 

Fees: $120/ month

 

This program teaches swimmers more advanced competitive swimming skills and the very basics of training. 

 

Trackers are encouraged to: 

  • Attend two or more 75 minute practices per week
  • Compete in beginning level meets and mid level B/C meets

 

Equipment Needs:

  • Bring a swimsuit, goggles, swim fins, and a water bottle to each practice

 

To be in this group you must be able to do the following:

  • Swim all four strokes
  • Flip turns
  • Starts off the blocks
  • Swim 300 yards freestyle with flip turns

 

Tracker Skills: underwater pull-outs for breaststroke, flip turns and open turns for IM races, relay starts, swim a set with rest periods, swim a set with training intervals, can read their times from a pace clock, know two-stroke drills for each stroke.

 

 

 

Hunters:

Fees: $130/ month 

This program fine tunes strokes, starts & turns and develops good training habits. Moderate training for stroke work is begun. 

 

 

Hunters are encouraged to: 

  • Attend three or more 90 minute workouts each week
  • Compete in B/C, A, and Championship level meets

 

Equipment Needs:

  • Bring a swimsuit, goggles, swim fins, a kick board, and a water bottle to each practice

 

To be in this group you must be able to do the following:

  • IM turns
  • pull-outs
  • be able to swim 300 yards freestyle under 5:45

 

Hunters Skills: Fine tune stroke techniques, flip turns, open turns, IM transitions, and starts.  Know three stroke drills for each stroke, and learn proper technique for streamlines, pull-outs, and break-outs. Improve conditioning and add yardage. Teaching and practice of skills is often at training/race pace.

 

 

Alpha Leaders:

 

Fees: $150/ month

Top-level youth program. These swimmers train hard for both stroke improvement and conditioning while maintaining and improving racing skills. Generally swimmers in Alpha Leaders are 11 and older.

 

Trackers are encouraged to: 

  • Attend four or more 120 minute practices per week
  • Compete in A and Championship level meets

 

Equipment Needs:

  • Bring a swimsuit, goggles, swim fins, a kick board, pull buoy and a water bottle to each practice

 

To be in this group you must be able to do the following:

  • 6 x 100 freestyle on 1:45 interval
  • Be able to keep up on all other strokes, with no major weak stroke
  • Complete a 500 freestyle in 7:45 or less
  • Be able to hold a 1:40 during a set of  10 x 100 IM’s on a 3:00 interval

 

Alpha Leader Skills: Develop excellence in race skills, including strokes, turns, tempo, and race preparation.

 

SENIORS

Varsity:


Fees: $160/ month

The emphasis on this group is on a specific training based upon the type of swimmer they are (distance, mid-distance/stroke, and sprint). These swimmers train for stroke improvement and conditioning while improving racing skills. This group is for experienced high school team swimmers and are typically 13 years and older.

 

Varsity swimmers are encouraged to: 

  • Attend five or more 120 minute practices per week
  • Compete in B/C, A, and Championship level meets

 

Equipment Needs:

  • Bring a swimsuit, goggles, swim fins, PDF fins, snorkel, stroke maker hand paddles, and kick-board, pull buoy, and a water bottle to each practice

 

To be in this group you must be able to do the following:

  • To move up to this group you must be able to do: 10 x 100 on the 1:25 interval
  • Swimmers should have their mechanics down for all strokes, turns, and starts

 

Varsity Skills: The emphasis on this group is on a specific training based upon the type of swimmer they are (distance, mid-distance/stroke, and sprint), and stroke corrections are made as needed.

 

National:


Fees: $170/ month

The emphasis on this group is on a specific training based upon the type of swimmer they are (distance, mid-distance/stroke, and sprint).This program is for the most dedicated and committed swimmers ages 13 to adult. These swimmers train hard for stroke improvement and conditioning while improving racing skills to there highest level. 

 

National Squad Swimmers are expected to: 

  • Attend all 150 minute workouts each week
  • Train year round at a high level
  • Compete in A, Championship, National level meets

 

Equipment Needs:

  • Bring a swimsuit, goggles, swim fins, PDF fins, stroke maker hand paddles, snorkel, a kick board, pull buoy, and a water bottle to each practice

 

To be in this group you must be able to do the following:

  • To move up to this group you must be able to do: 10 x 100 on the 1:10 interval and 5 x 200 IM on the 2:45
  • Swimmers should have their mechanics down for all strokes, turns, and starts before moving into this group

 

National Squad Skills: Develop excellence in race skills, including strokes, turns, tempo, and race preparation. Stroke corrections are made as needed.

 

Moving up to the next practice level will occur with the recommendation of your present level coach and approval of the next level coach. Talk to your coaches about your goals and needs.
